I came to indexing after a varied career which has qualified me to index books on everything from humanities, biography and popular science to cookery and gardening.
My first degree is in English from Cambridge University. In later life, ashamed of my complete ignorance of things scientific, I gained a BSc (Hons) from the Open University, specialising in earth and life sciences – with oceanography and an art history course thrown in for fun.
Before training as an indexer, I was employed as a bookseller, manager of a museum shop and subtitler of television programmes for the deaf and hard of hearing. The museum fulfilled my love of history and, as a subtitler, I learned about every subject under the sun, from antiques and azaleas to zooplankton and zucchini.
On days off from subtitling, I catalogued and created a database for the music library of my local adult education college.
